As promised, here is part 3 of our conservatorship series. This time we do a little digging into the Britney Spears conservatorship case. If you want to catch up you can start with Conservatorships, Pt. 1 and Conservatorships, Pt. 2. For the most part we have focused on the use of conservatorships when we have an aging parent or loved one who needs help paying their bills or making it to their doctor’s appointments. However, the Britney Spears conservatorship was not about an elderly person. It shows another sort of situation where conservatorships are often sought. That is, when a person suffers with mental illness or another disability where making life decisions can be difficult.
Let me take you back to 2007. Britney Spears was not doing to well. We were all a bit shocked when she shaved her head, weren’t we? She desperately needed some help. What you may not know is that there was already a conservatorship in place. In 2008, after her downward spiral, Spears returned to court to tell them that she would not oppose continuing the conservatorship, with her father as conservator, indefinitely. Fast forward to 2019.
What will happen with the Britney Spears Conservatorship now?
All this time, Britney’s father, Jamie Spears has acted as her conservator of person and estate. That is, until untimely medical issues put him in the hospital and forced Britney back to court. There are a couple things going on here, as of late. Jamie’s health problems have tried Britney’s mental state and she had to spend some time in-patient after learning the news. The first new development was that her mother, Lynne, who remains by her side, went into court to request updates on Britney.
Second, as part of the Britney Spears conservatorship review process, Britney is exploring options to oppose the conservatorship in the future. Due to new circumstances, the judge ordered a 730 evaluation performed where an independent psychologist examines Britney’s ongoing conservatorship needs.
We will keep you tuned in as to the outcome. Britney Spears seems to have mental health issues resulting in the need for a conservatorship. The outcome of the evaluation and the court’s next decision about the conservatorship is based upon Britney’s needs. We are just happy that she is getting the protection a conservatorship offers. Our hearts go out to you Brit!
